About my injury ....

This is my CT scan from early 2011.
After have an x-ray by my mothers chiropractor he discovered that I had something wrong with it. This made him seriously worry about it. My mum then contacted the doctor and asked them to have a look at the x-ray that he did and see if they could give us an answer. The doctors told me that there wasn't anything wrong with me and that the best thing i could do to stop the pain was excersise. I carried on with the excercise and the pain just got worse so my mum contacted them again and I went to see them again. The only thing they had to say was that it will get worse before it gets better.
A few weeks went by and I was in silly amounts of pain. My mum contacted Bupa, a private health care, and made an appointment with a back specialist. When I went to see the specialist he assessed me and my hip flexis and the muscles in my bum, back and core and felt my spine. I was unable to do things such as touch my toes, I couldn't get past my knees without being in pain. The consultant then said that he wanted me to have scans, so I had more x-rays and he wasn't happy with them as you couldn't see my spine very clear. I then went for an MRI scan. This gave a more clear image and we where able to see what was wrong but just to double check I had a CT scan and more x-ray's. The CT scan (image above) gave the best image and showed clearly what was wrong with my spine. The consultant then confirmed to me that I had Spondylolisthesis and Spondylosis.

My physiotherapist said that I need to work on building the muscles within my core, bum and back to be able to hold myself correctly as my posture isn't correct. This is due to my hips having rotated forward and also because i stand in a certain way to stop me from getting any pain within my back.

What is Spondylolisthesis?
Spondylolisthesis is where one of your vertebrate has moved and has caused a step within your spine. As you can see from my scan above, the vertebrate at the top of my spine are all inline but the one at the bottom (the one circled) is out of place (moved away from my spinal cord) and has created a step within the curve in my back.

What is Spondylosis?
Spondylosis, also known as a stress fracture is where there is a fracture in one of the vertebrate within your spine. In my case it is in my lower spine, also known as Lumbar Spondylosis. This can be caused by certain sports activities, lifting heavy stuff too often, age, an accident, or maybe something that somebody was born with. It occures when you put too much pressure on a certain part of your spine too much. This stops you from being able to sit or stand for long periods of time because it causes you to be in pain.

Questionnaire Results

From looking at my results I can see that more females than males have answered my questionnaire. As it is only two more people this wont effect my results. I can also see that the people who answered this where mostly between the ages of 21 and 35, closely followed by 16-20. This is a good age group as the target audience for BBC 3 are between the ages of 16 and 34.
19 people have said yes they would watch my documentary and only 3 have said no. From analysing my results in closer detail I found out that 2 males and 1 female had said no. All 3 of these people did not watch BBC 3 and where between the ages of 21-35. This has not effected my results and decision on making the documentary due to it only being 3 people. They may have said no due to a number of reasons. I believe that some of these reasons are that they are not interested in pole fitness and would find it boring, they don’t have an understanding of what it is, or maybe because they don’t watch BBC 3 .

Treatment

Journey through treatment

This is my scan  of where my back is injured
The drip I had to have put in my hand for local anaesthetic so that I wouldn't be able to feel the needles I had. I had to have a steroid injection in one side of my back and on the other side I had a pain killer injection. I got told by consultant that these injections may ware off within 6 weeks and that I would be in pain again. Out of every 10 people that have this treatment, my consultant said that it only seems to work for 1 maybe 2 people. Luckily I was one of them people that it had worked for. I did have the offer to have an operation but there was a massive risk of things going wrong due to it being so close to my spinal cord. I also got told by him that I would need to do physio therapy along side to build up the strength within my core, lower back and bum. When I saw my physiotherapist he told me that I need to work a lot on my hips as my hips had rotated forward. We had to try and correct them before we could start building up that strenght. after roughly about 5-6 months, nothing was changing in my hips so we had to give up on that and just work on building up my strength. After roughly a year of doing physiotherapy I gave up doing it. I took up another form of excersise, pole fitness. Pole has given me more strength and has done a lot more for me than my physiotherapy ever did. Physio seemed to be a long procsses of building my muscles up and I soon got bored of it. I believe that pole has done the best for me and is keeping me out of pain. I still need to work on rotating my hips back though.

This is the marks of where I had the injections.

Where on my back the injections got put.

Documentary Modes

The Expository or Griersonian Mode
Griersonian mode is a documentary mode with a voice over. It leaves you no room to have an opinion and tells you how to view the film.
Cinema Verite
Within cinema verite documentaries you are able to see and hear the director. There can also sometimes be a voice over which will be the directors voice. It is always the directors opinion given but you are able to argue against them. This type of documentary gives the documentary a more balanced argument.
Direct Cinema
A direct cinema documentary has no voice over and you are unable to see the director. This allows you to have your own opinion and argument and also to be able to view the film how you want to.

My approach
I will be taking the approach of cinema verite as I believe it gives a more balanced view on what somebody is saying and that they are not being pressured or hinted into saying something. Also I will be within the documentary and you will be able to hear and see me so therefor I am limited to only being able to use the style of cinema verite.

Risk Assessment

I had to create 4 risk assessments, this being one of them. I had to do 4 due to filming in 4 places. If I hadn't had done the risk assessments I wouldn't have been able to film in the 4 locations that i want to film in.

Proposal

Proposal
Title: Breaking the mould

Idea
My idea is to create a documentary on how pole fitness has helped me. I am going to focus on how I got into pole fitness, where I am today and how it has helped me with my injury.

Developing the idea
Within this documentary I am going to have a few people from the pole studio and also me. The story will be based on me and how I came into pole with a serious back injury and not building myself up to it. The others that will be included in this will be my mum Joanne, Leah, Lisa and Carla.
My mum has been doing pole for abut 4 ½ years and has been teach for about 2 months. I am almost at the same stage/ability as her within pole. I am able to do most of the moves and tricks that she is able to do.
Leah is an X-Pole representative. X-Pole is the most well known pole and pole Accessories Company within the industry. They also hold competitons and enter competitions around the world. Leah is a teacher at the Cardiff Pole Twisters Studio and has been for about 5 years and has been doing pole for a total of about 7 years.
Carla and Lisa are the owners of Pole Twisters in both Cardiff and Barry. They have both been doing pole for about 10 years. They have had the Cardiff Studio for about 4 years and the Barry Studio for about 6 months. Before they had these studios Lisa, Carla and Leah used to teach a small group of people Monday – Friday above Passion in Cardiff. When they had enough money and students they decided that they would open their own studio. About 2 years ago they wanted to open a second. They started fund raising and 6 months ago they finally opened their second studio.
Also within this documentary I will be including images of my scans, me in hospital when having treatment, interviews, routines and me teaching.

Characters
Me
The reason I am in this documentary is because I am basing the whole thing around me. I am going to be saying how I had 2 years out of any kind of sport and fitness exercise apart from my physio and then went straight into pole a year ago without building myself up toward it. From when I started pole just over a year ago to today I believe that I have improved massively with my strength and health. It has helped me with my recovery whereas my physio didn’t really do a lot for me. I was still in so much pain and struggled to get through the day when I was having a bad day. Although I will never be fully recovered as well as the treatment I received in hospital I believe that pole has had a huge part to play. If I decided that I no longer wanted to do pole or any other fitness activity I would be back the old way when I was in agony every single day. Pole has given me a massive amount of strength in such a short space of time. Before starting pole I was unable to simple things such as doing just 1 ait up. After 3 months of starting I was able to do about 20. To my family and me this was a huge improvement and from there on I have continued to progress. I believe that if I had carried on with just my physio alone I would not be at the stage I’m at today.

Mum

The reason I am including my mum is to interview her and to get her to say how much she has seen me progress from the day I found out about my injury to today.  My mum also has some troubles with her back so knows the difficulties that I go through not only just at pole but also outside pole. I am now at the same level as my mum at pole so we are able to give eachother help and advice. There are moves that she can do that I can and vice versa.

Leah
Leah has been teaching me for about 6-8 months as my stretch and flax and also my mixed ability teacher and in about 2/3 weeks will be my tricks teacher. I am including Leah, as I am able to show some of her routines from competitions that she has done and also how she has seen me progress these past couple of months. Another reason I am including her is because I would love to be able to do the things that she does within the pole industry such as competitions, representing and teaching.

Approach
When interviewing people I will be taking the approach of Griesonion mode. I am taking this approach because I believe that it shows that the person being interviewed isn’t being pressured into saying something. It shows a more balanced of things.

Access
I am able to get access to all the facilities and people that I need and want to. I have gained permission to record and interview the people that I want as well as gaining permission to record in the places I want including places like the Cardiff Pole Twisters Studio.

Final sum up
I believe that by doing this documentary it will change peoples perspective on pole fitness and show them what pole fitness actually is. Most people believe/assume that pole dancing fitness is stripping in nightclubs. People fitness is based on building up strength and flexibility whilst learning new moves and tricks as well as helping others and enjoying yourself in a different form of exercise. Pole fitness is becoming an increasingly popular sport that a lot of people are now taking up as a hobby.

Questionnaire

I have created a questionnaire and put it online for people to view and complete. As well as this i have handed out printed copies for people to complete.

Planning

So far i have done a little bit of planning. I have done a brainstorm to come up with ideas of what to write for my proposal and for inspiration on my documentary. I find that by brainstorming, taking notes and listing ideas for my planning I have a better outcome on my work. I find it a lot easier to be able to write paragraphs etc. from notes and brainstorms.

What have I done so far?

So far I have created a questionnaire. With this questionnaire I put it online on my Facebook account and also printed it off and handed it out to people to fill in for me. With this information and data from this questionnaires I can write a few sentences about each question to explain what I have found out. This will then hep me with creating my documentary. This is primary research.

I have also started doing some research about pole fitness. I have found out when pole dancing became a fitness activity and not just stripping in a night club. All the information I have found out can be used within my documentary and in my planning and research pages to show what I have found out. This is my secondary research.
As well as these I have also gone to the pole studio in Cardiff and asked the owners for permission to film in there and gained permission. In the studio I will be filming my self and two other girls. I have also asked and got permission to film these people. The other two people i will be filming have many years experience and are also teachers.

My idea for my documentary

My idea for my documentary is to almost tell a story about how I got into pole fitness and where I am today. It will be based on me and my injury.

I will be explaining about how i was off any sport and exercise for 2 years due to this injury and then went straight into pole without slowly getting myself back into exercise.  I will be saying about how i found out about my injury and the medical proceeders I had to go through and what different doctors had said to me. I will also be explaining how i got into the sport and why. It will also include my mum and a couple of the girls from my pole studio and how they have seen me progressed over the past year.
I have been doing pole fitness for just over a year now and i believe that I have progressed massively and gained a lot of strength in such a short amount of time.
